Lost Trail Club GPSing Trails

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) has issued a statement to the New York State Snowmobile Association that "official" GPS figures of trail mileage  by all Clubs will be mandatory by 2011 in order to receive state trail funding.

This must be done by a  professional company and not by individually owned personal GPS recorders.  This puts one more expense onto the clubs.  Lost Trail decided to 'git r done' and contacted the Herkimer-Oneida County Comprehensive Planning Program (HOCCPP).  Shown here  on a snowy Feb. 25th, is Erin Tylutki, a Geographical Information System (GIS) Technician with the Utica Office working the C4E (Constableville) trail.  President Dan Stysh drove Ms. Tylutki from the Groomer Barn to the former Hilltop Restaurant on Spencer Road in the newly purchased Pisten Bully Groomer.  Only needing to measure the trail in one direction,  Groomer Driver Dale Flansberg met them to take over the groomer.  To save time and get as much measuring done as possible, Stysh and Tylutki then motored back to the Barn where they were met with the other Groomer to GPS another portion of the trail system.  It will be interesting to see how close the official GPS measurement comes to what the Club has been using for many years....which is 76 miles including the new Port Leyden trail.   Stay tuned, we will keep you informed.
