Challenging start to the season

Groomer fixed, then tree limb falls and brakes windshield while grooming. Bridge breaks. Both windshield and bridge are fixed. LOTS of SNOW - trails are open.

It has been a busy weekend for the club. The recent storm left 2 to 5 feet of fluffy snow on the trails. Unfortunately, with no base, we had to keep the trails closed until the groomers could get out and pack down the trails. It was a quick switch from the mowing the club was doing on Wednesday, 12/9/09. Fences were still up as livestock were still in the fields just last week.

After waiting for parts for the PistenBully, the guys were able to get it back together and groom the White Lake trail and the Towpath trail Saturday night, 12/12/09. As they were grooming, a large tree limb fell onto the groomer and broke the windshield. A new windshield was purchased and installed on Monday. The PistenBully is back out grooming the West Leyden trail on Monday night.

Also on Saturday, the main trail behind the Big M was being groomed when the smaller of the two bridges broke. The groomer was fine, but the bridge was impassable. On Monday, the crew was able to rebuild the bridge to get the trail open at 5:00 pm. More work needs to be done on the bridge, but it is passable.

Overall, it has been a great effort by the club trail crew! These are guys that have day jobs in addition to having to get their driveways cleared for their families. When you see them on the trails, give them a pat on the back - buy them a brew or coffee. They have also worked through the off season mowing and replaces bridges. Better yet - try to find some time this winter or next year to volunteer and lend a hand.

Please remember that all of these things cost money. Join the club!
